This course allows students to further develop 2D and 3D design skills and practices within the context of the discipline, and to build on the skills introduced in Design Studio 1. In the second course of a four-course core sequence, students will be moving towards competency in the application of design and research processes, while seeking appropriate technical 3D solutions. Students will then continue to refine their approaches in regard to primary research and balancing the technical with the aesthetic. Design Studio 2 works collaboratively with Visual Communication Studio 2 and Creative Technical Studio 2.

The Womenswear pathway develops technically rigorous designers fluent in the construction methods, patternmaking systems, and design conventions specific to womenswear. Students engage the full breadth of the field, from soft dressmaking and draping to structured tailoring, while building the research fluency and visual sensibility needed to articulate a distinct creative point of view, engaging with the history and evolving present of the discipline. The pathway invites students to reconsider body, silhouette, and garment in new contexts, pushing beyond convention toward necessary redefinitions of form. Inclusive design is embedded throughout the curriculum. Students work across a range of body types and explore diverse expressions of gender within their practice, ensuring that technical mastery supports a broad and current vision of what womenswear can be.

In this course, students continue to advance the concepts begun in the first semester experience and heightened in Visual Communication 1. The emphasis moves to a more disciplinary Fashion focus on how meaning is constructed and communicated through visual media. Students continue to use traditional drawing and digital imaging methods to explore the conceptual, aesthetic and formal qualities that inform how ideas and impressions are expressed on a two-dimensional plane and beyond that. Students explore visual organization and representational forms and engagement through observational drawing, photography, digital image creation, time-based explorations, and the integration of a variety of media. Digital imaging tools continue to include raster and vector software applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro, to explore 2D and time-based presentations. Analog drawing tools continue to include wet and dry media and various substrates. Visual Communication Studio 2 works collaboratively with Design Studio 2 and Creative Technical Studio 2.

The Collection pathway challenges you to consider approaches to body, gender, age, and size, amongst others, in order to develop new narratives, definitions and terminologies within a clearly defined visual aesthetic beyond traditional contexts. Deep exploration in terms of research and process towards unexpected outcomes across gender is encouraged. Students are encouraged to redefine the meaning of a Collection.
