Media Art & Studio Practice
Parsons School of Design: Parsons First Year
CRN: 17153
Credits: 3
This course investigates how contemporary artists and cultural producers use media technologies—such as video, the internet, generative software, and AI—to explore image making, identity, community, and place. Emphasising critical engagement over aesthetics alone, students will examine how media art can challenge dominant narratives, uncover hidden histories, and imagine alternative futures.Through weekly seminars students will analyse artworks, exhibitions, and key texts that address speculative design, queerness, complexity, and public storytelling. The course encourages students to think beyond traditional formats and consider how digital interventions can reshape physical environments and social realities. Combining theory with practice, students will develop conceptual and creative approaches to media art that respond to the urgent cultural, political, and environmental questions of our time. The course builds knowledge for students to actually feel capable of implementing artistic practices and concepts in their work that draws from Past , Present and Future Media Technologies. It also helps to foster curiosity and personal agency in students as they consider what it might mean to become an artist and designer during a time of massive technological change. These courses also offer the space to make deep connections between studio work and writing and verbal communication about their work. It shows how software, generative and AI art can engage with the issues of our time rather than just producing novel visuals.
