Sound and Space

Spring 2019

Taught By: John Roach

Section: A

CRN: 4243

Credits: 3

This course takes a deep look at the way sound exists in space and provides an introduction to designing for an immersive sonic experience. This begins with ad hoc methods: for example, playing 17 sounds from iPhones distributed through a physical environment, and progresses to an in depth use of Adobe Audition to explore 5.1 surround editing, mixing and multi-speaker arrays. The activities of the class are grounded in a basic introduction to auditory perception, the behavior of sound in the natural and built environment, and precedents in art, architecture and technology.

Open to: Parsons First Year students, and others, space provided.
