Make A Pop-Up Shop

Spring 2020

Taught By: Dimitri Koumbis

Section: A

CRN: 6123

Credits: 3

Retail, food festivals, craft fairs, art galleries, and community organizing are just some of the many activities that contribute to the $50 billion dollar pop-up industry. Pop-ups show how designers can create temporary platforms that increase visibility, generate awareness, and engages the public. In this course, students will leverage the potential of pop-up retailing to explore the entire journey, from making to marketing their designs. The semester will culminate in the implementation of an actual pop-up shop where student design work will be sold. All funds generated by the pop-up will be donated to an organization that members of the course collectively decide to support. Students will work in the Making Center to develop their designs and will also visit online and physical marketplaces like Etsy, miLES, and Peerspace to learn more about the pop-up industry. Open to: Parsons First Year students, and others, space provided.
