Project Sheepskin
Parsons School of Design: Parsons First Year
CRN: 18177
Credits: 3
In this course, students will develop scalable products using New York State sourced sheepskins. Students will study the value chain of sheep, from farm to fiber, and design products guided by criteria including material integrity, commercialization potential, innovation, and environmental impact. Students work directly with tanned sheepskins provided by New York State farms who are enrolled in Climate Beneficialâ„¢ environmental practices to develop garments, accessories, and home goods grounded in principles of circular design, durability, and agricultural sustainability. The farm-supplied standardized pelts, along with instructional materials and virtual engagement with livestock production systems, sheepskin preparation, and tanning processes, will allow students to engage with the full material lifecycle from farm to finished product. This course applies research and making methods to address a critical gap in the New York fiber and livestock system: the widespread underutilization and disposal of sheepskins as a byproduct of lamb production.
