Celluloid Experiments
Parsons School of Design: Parsons First Year
CRN: 15075
Credits: 3
The course begins with an introduction to and discussion of some of the earliest known moving image experiments (broadly defined) and through individual and collaborative assignments, students will explore the continued impact that these early tests continue to have on contemporary video and film-based experimental practices. Students will then begin their own celluloid journeys, working with the Super8 camera and film cartridge as an entry-level tool for creating moving image artworks. Techniques and tactics to be discussed and utilized include single-roll films, in-camera editing, time-lapse, camera + performance, editing film by hand, and direct filmmaking. We will consider past and contemporary artists’ use of the Super8 camera as well as celluloid more broadly in the creation of personal and diaristic films, along with readings, in-class workshops, and site visits. Throughout the course, students will also be introduced and guided through the ever-changing ecosystem of ‘analog’ filmmaking as it exists today – from the use of artist-run and nonprofit labs, film to digital workflow, sourcing equipment for future film projects, and festivals and screening venues that support artists working on film.
