This course explores mural-making as a communicative and transformative art form that engages public and community spaces. Students will investigate mural making as a vehicle for expressing vision, message, narrative, and values while developing work that reflects their personal lens and responds to the social and spatial dynamics of site-specific contexts. This course will integrate drawing, painting, and digital media with critical readings, discussions, and proposal development. Individual projects and collaborative practices will ground students’ knowledge in mural-making. Emphasis will be placed on the formal qualities of mural composition, including spatial organization, scale, and the sequencing of images over time. Students will also study color theory as it applies to mural design, in relation to perception, distance, and visual impact. Through hands-on studio work, students will learn methods for enlarging designs, selecting appropriate materials and substrates, and making informed choices based on environmental conditions, archival concerns, and surface durability. Students will cultivate practical skills in project planning and community engagement. The course will analyze existing public artworks—utilizing the New School Art Collection—and examine a broad range of practices, including fine art murals, signs and textual work, interior wall decoration, and community-engaged public projects. Students will document and reflect on their process and creative growth throughout the semester.
