Textiles: Constructing Cloth, Exploring Dimension
Parsons School of Design: Parsons First Year
CRN: 17088
Credits: 3
This studio course introduces students to textile construction through hands-on exploration and creative problem-solving. Students will construct textiles and fiber forms through explorations of knitting, weaving, crochet, knotting, and basketry techniques—learning how stitches, loops, knots, twists, and other structures build cloth. By experimenting across different scales, students will be encouraged to push the boundaries of what can be created with these techniques. Through process-based learning that emphasizes iteration, collaboration, and embodied experience, students will build creative methodologies and develop insight into textile making. Foundational techniques such as macramé, lace-making, felting, off-loom beading, and spinning will be introduced, with a focus on understanding space, direction, dimension, and geometry in textiles. Independent research will inform each student’s approach, encouraging a connection between materials and techniques and broader social and environmental narratives. The course culminates in a final project—designed to be worn or inhabited—that synthesizes the methods and concepts explored throughout the semester. Throughout the course, students will document and reflect on their creative processes and the insights gained.
