In this hands-on studio course, students will explore the fundamentals of material logic and textile design through creative problem-solving and experiential learning. Emphasizing process-based exploration, the course fosters insight through embodied practice, peer collaboration, and iterative making. Students will be introduced to a wide range of textile embellishment and surface design techniques, including hand embroidery, quilting, bead embroidery, and various printing methods, both digital and analog. Through these methods, students will examine how textiles can serve as tools for communication—embedding symbols, textures, and patterns to convey stories and information. Independent research will inform each student’s approach, encouraging a connection between materials and techniques and broader social and environmental narratives. The course culminates in a self-directed final project, allowing students to synthesize their skills and interests into a personally meaningful textile work. Throughout the course, students will document and reflect on their creative processes and the insights gained. An archive of surfaces, stitching, and materials, and will expand research into a final embellished textile.
