Studio Lab: Light and Surface Interaction
Parsons School of Design: School of Constructed Env.
CRN: 5320
Credits: 2
In this class, students will be introduced to and actively work with the nature of light, perception, and materiality. Topics addressed include daylighting, shadow, constructed lighting, light and color, reflective light, material, and surface. Deeper considerations of the nature of light and darkness along with an understanding of the perceptual relationships between light and shadow will be considered. Through observations and explorations, the students will become experienced in the nature and conditions of light, color, and shadow. Research, including built case studies, allow for greater understanding of specific connections between human perception, place, time, space, form and surface. Ways of studying light and shadow through model making, digital means, exterior observation and orthographic drawings, including sections will be emphasized. Tools will include direct model photography and digital tools. Use of the Lighting Lab, Material Lab and Making Center will be introduced to allow students to propose, study and edit design projects.
