This course looks at the relationship between text and images within the expanding field of illustration from a theoretical perspective. The Seminar course will help students learn to connect reading, writing and making in ways that are essential to illustration in its many forms. The three-hour sophomore Core 2D Seminar will examine topics in 2-dimensionally based Illustration including visual narrative (comics, graphic novels, children’s books, text-image journalism and essays) editorial illustration and illustrative posters and other innovative practices within a cultural and historical context. The Seminar will include a number of cross-sectional lectures relating to innovative practice and topics in 2D Illustration. Students will be expected to respond to course lectures in various formats which may include group discussions and written or drawn reflections. Throughout the course of the semester, students will build an archive of their reflections (on Canvas or in sketchbooks). They will be expected to understand this practice as a tool for documenting, learning, reflecting and generating ideas, and to keep and use additional process books throughout their experience at Parsons.
