In this course, students build on the skills and design thinking developed in previous studio classes with increasing complexity of program and context. Students will be expected to call upon their accumulated design process and skills to approach projects with complex programs at the scale of an institution such as a library, school, physical fitness, or medical facility. Emphasis will be placed on working with a diverse public, a specific community with needs and requirements which students will uncover through various research methodologies. Working collaboratively, students will research and investigate the assigned program requirements, compiling background information such as precedents and theories of practice, emerging developments and trends, and employing various primary and secondary research methods and tools, including analysis of site-specific conditions. Students will also explore other project-specific interdisciplinary issues such as building systems and codes, as well as contemporary spatial-social opportunities with physical and digital institutional spaces. The projects undertaken in this studio will challenge the students to design spaces of inclusion and elation, responding to fostering human interconnectedness and shared desires, through successful programming, design layout, and concept development.
