This course aims to further your development in craft and approach as a director. In this course, you will attempt every part of the directing process, from table-work to polishing, in a hands-on setting and in collaboration with actors. You will pitch, research, cast, analyze, stage, and present a portion of a play written in the last decade. Through reading, discussion, and application, your work in this course will focus on story, style, concept, supporting the actor's process, staging, and identifying your voice and approach as a director. As a director, how do you have an idea that matters? How does a director's visual imagination work? How do you communicate big ideas to your designers and actors? How do you make sure your visual ideas come from both the text as well as from your unique artistic perspective and heart? In this directing class, you will build tools you need to make your personal artistic vision come to life visually on stage while honoring the text and intentions of the writer. You will learn to look at a single play from multiple, varied angles all in service of great storytelling with one unified vision.
