Advanced Directing: The Alternate Universe
College of Performing Arts: Drama
CRN: 11933
Credits: 3
This course aims to further your development in craft and approach as a director. In this course, you will explore the relationship between a creator and a space and an audience. Playing with notions of investigative, devised, site -specific, immersive and interactive you will discover an alternate toolbox for your director repertoire. You will examine how to observe, listen and engage with an unconventional space and with its community; ways to create a performance for the space rather than against it; ways to generate new material inspired by a space, and ways to guide an audience through an unfamiliar space. Each student will have an opportunity to propose and direct an immersive or site-specific structure at the end of the class as their final project. What are the roles in a collaboration? Can a space dictate a performance? Can an audience affect a show? How can a director attempt to control the universe of unforeseen events?
