Contemporary Women Playwrights
College of Performing Arts: Drama
CRN: 11731
Credits: 3
How are some of the most exciting voices in American theatre today changing the conversation about what it’s possible to say and how it’s possible to say it? To answer that question we will analyze seven or eight living contemporary women playwrights’ work from a playwright-practioner’s perspective. Along the way we will look critically at the work, read what the authors themselves have to say, address ways to correct the gender imbalance in the American theatre, and ponder if there is a female dramatic aesthetic. Every two weeks we will try a different short creative dramatic writing exercise in response to what we are reading, and there will be one very short critical paper or creative project required at end term (your choice). No previous dramatic writing experience necessary—only a taste for adventure. Note: This course counts for the Gender Studies minor.
