Body I
College of Performing Arts: Drama
CRN: 12638
Credits: 2
As a hybrid artist your physical instrument is your entire body which includes the voice. Your instrument has been impacted by genetic and adaptive patterns of behavior and movement over time. You bring to the learning space your own embodiment and physical voice which has been influenced by individual and generational experience, shaped by many factors. We will look to release habitual tension that blocks expression of the inner life. At the heart of this course Mindfulness practices of Thich Nhat Hanh will be introduced and developed as an ensemble practice. We will engage with ways to free the body of unnecessary physical tension and encourage the breath for inspiration, clarity of thought, and freedom of expression engaged by both the kinesthetic and aural imagination. Engagement with various somatic practices along with sounding scores will be knit together in order to open and expand the relationship of body, breath, voice, and creativity. This foundational course introduces, explores, and applies specific means to awaken sensory appreciation, deepen one's listening and enliven expressivity. Explorations will draw from Foundations of Mindfulness, Sensory Awareness, Embodied Anatomy, Developmental Movement, and Vocal Explorations.
