The Scene
College of Performing Arts: Drama
CRN: 14523
Credits: 2
This course builds on the foundations of Story, deepening students’ exploration of the intersection of text analysis and physical/vocal embodiment from a writer’s perspective. Utilizing text analysis tools and imagination-based exercises, students dive deep into selections from both contemporary and classic playwrights to better understand how each scene fits into the scope of a larger story. Students identify the essential structures within successful scenes, apply that knowledge to their own writing, and create a short piece. Students strengthen their relationships with dramatic text in performance, learn how to collaborate on new text, rewrite new text, and/or work with new pages from the actor’s perspective. This course meets concurrently with Intermediate Acting I to extend students’ facility with collaborative processes between playwrights and actors, engaging in critical feedback and analysis to refine performance and texts of new pieces.
