Performance Skills: Advanced Acting 1 is an exploration of the internal and external preparation that an actor needs in order to effectively render the moment-to- moment life of a character within the context of a scene. This course is meant to promote a rigorous investigation of how the actor uses the ‘self’ as the foundation for transformation. While rehearsing scenes, this class will require actors to fully explore the questions they need to ask themselves for character and scene analysis. We will explore techniques of developing character during scene work by paying rigorous attention to social and historical context as well as using physicality, rhythm, language and inner emotional life. The class will consist of close reading, research presentations, rehearsals and performance of scenes drawn from a selection of classic American plays. The material used in Performance Skills – Adv Acting 1 will be based on the specific needs and experiences of members of the class. We will focus on scenes from contemporary classic playwrights like Tennessee Williams, Eugene O’Neil, Lynn Nottage, Lorraine Hansberry, August Wilson, Arthur Miller and others. The choice of scenes will be consistent with the needs of the individuals in class with an eye to guiding students into further mastery of the craft of acting. This course is an intensive, hands-on, on-your-feet class which involves both the physical and emotional exploration of specific texts. The majority of class time is dedicated to exercises, rehearsals and presentations during which you will receive coaching and constructive criticism. You will also learn to provide effective feedback to your fellow classmates. You will also be responsible for an oral mid-term presentation of research rehearsal preparation of character and scene work.
