Global Drama in Context 2
College of Performing Arts: Drama
CRN: 11753
Credits: 3
This course seeks to expand upon Global Theater in Context I by focusing on ideas of form and style. In Global Theater in Context I, the goal was to disrupt traditional academic theatre history instruction by first examining how “theater” & “performance” come to be named and then exploring dual contexts which inform theater & performance: the historical context in which the work was created and the individual context from which it is being read/viewed. Global Theater in Context II will take these questions further by asking students to assess whom these texts are for and their forms and/or styles signal about their creators artistic values. The course will center around discussions of “form,” “structure,” “dramaturgy,” “method,” and will ask students to grapple with the notion of “style” itself, raising questions such as: How has the artist crafted this text to reflect a certain time, place or set of values? How does the way the text has been crafted inform the way in which the text is received? How has culture informed the success of the text or the performance? How has culture impacted the ways in which the performance is labeled? Evaluated? Remembered? Reviewed? And most importantly students will be asked to examine what, if anything, does the deep study of these questions help me to understand about my own style and the artists that I respond to favorably?
