Performance Art will expose students to the origins, history, practice, and socio-cultural significance of live, interdisciplinary performance art. Beginning with an analysis of early movements like Futurism, Dadaism, Surrealism, students will be ushered through decades of theory and praxis, encountering the work of groups and movements including, but not limited to, Black Mountain College, Judson Church, Happenings, Fluxus, and the artists therein. Through reading, watching, listening, and cultivating a foundation of theory and philosophy within performance art, students will become practiced in analyzing and responding to works of performance art, situating them aesthetically, culturally, politically, and historically. Additionally, they will gain insight into how performance art might influence their own artistic practice.
