This course explores relationships between urban food production and activism for social and environmental justice. As a class, we will research discuss concepts of urban agriculture and food activism and will review various types of urban agriculture and community-activism in food production in cities. Students will investigate how urban agriculture and food activism are prevalent in a particular case study, will identify the specific goal and needs within this case study as a “wicked problem” and will make an implementable 2d+3D+4D proposal of how to provide support to enhance stakeholders’ involvement and how to bring about change. The course includes online guest lectures and virtual field trips, as well as individual food activism driven participation in a community urban agriculture project. This participation should focus on defining and responding to a “wicked problem”, a particular challenge in the context of urban food production and social and environmental context. The individual responses should target bringing about change through the creation of a community-based installation and event that motivates various stakeholders to become active in the particular community project. This is a hybrid course that meets in the following mode: Tuesdays we meet online from 4-5:50 pm; the additional two hours of the course each week consist of asynchronous material and instructor guidance using Canvas modules and discussions. Students will have homework outside of the synchronous/asynchronous modules.
