Toxic Worlds
Schools of Public Engagement: Global, Urban, & Environmental
CRN: 15416
Credits: 4
This course looks at the intersections of industrial toxins, public health, and environmental justice. From PFAS in our water, to lead in our food supply, to noxious dyes in our fast fashion, dangerous chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides and other pollutants have increasingly adulterated our everyday environments. These toxins can not only make us sick, but they also harm the natural world and contribute to climate change. As these issues have increased during the Anthropocene, so have efforts to educate the public and regulate companies doing the most harm. We review some of those historic battles, but also look at where current efforts are being focused and why. The fight for cleaner environments is often led by everyday folks who have been negatively impacted by un- or under-regulated contaminants. Our discussions give precedence to these voices and the different ways people have leveraged educational campaigns, legal action, public policy, and protests to self-advocate for their families and communities.
