This course is designed for graduate and undergraduate scholars, students, staff, and activists who seek to understand the range of investor tactics that lead to social change and corporate responsibility: divestment; social impact bonds; shareholder activism and other emerging forms of social investing. To understand financial disruption and what would be a radical act one must understand the financial system and the radical disruptions that have taken place by financial actors or policy makers and activists to effect social change. We will explore the basics of the American financial system, stock and bond markets, differences between private equity, public equity, hedge funds, and other financial products. The course will also address fiduciary rulings and trust funds, with historical examples such as Harvard's endowment mismanagement, the case of Long Term Capital, South African divestment and other ESG developments.
