This course invites students to queer the city, and by doing so, to imagine possibilities for a more just urban life. By queering the city, we mean, "messing things up, creating disorder and disruptive commotion within the normative arrangements of bodies, things, spaces and institutions," as theorist Martin Manalansan puts it. In this way, we challenge normative landscapes, structures, and policies that constrain our capacities to live full lives. We also look to those networks, social practices, and systems of care that have the potential for liberation. In order to explore these, we use the framework of Queer Urbanism, which offers alternative principles that do not assume wealth or traditional family structures in the creation and shaping of everyday life. As queer spaces in cities dwindle (there are currently fewer than 30 lesbian bars across the country, compared to roughly 200 in the 1980s) and a slew of anti-LGBTQ+ laws are enacted throughout the U.S., it is more important than ever to center the
