This class focuses on programmatic symphonic works of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Beginning with concert overtures of Beethoven, Berlioz, Mendelssohn, and Schumann, the chronological survey will include the symphonic poems of Liszt, Strauss, and Debussy. Extra-musical influences such as literature, theater, mythology, and painting, will be emphasized as well as the tonal structure and form of the works themselves. This course fulfills the requirement for Graduate Seminar for MM students.
