Music Notation 1
Fall 2024
Taught By: Christopher Cerrone
Section: A

CRN: 11813

Credits: 2

How can I translate my musical ideas into notes and rhythms that performers can understand? Why does presentation matter, anyway? The first half of this yearlong course addresses these central questions by introducing composers to basic music engraving, notation, and preparation concepts. Students will learn contemporary and historical approaches to notation and apply that knowledge to current engraving technology, including applied methods in three common programs: Dorico, Sibelius, and Finale. Students will also learn to think about printed music in the language of graphic design, with an emphasis on practical knowledge of preparing music for the musicians who will play it. Music Notation 1A will focus on instrumental chamber music, and the coursework will include score study and engraving projects. The only prerequisite for this course is having some level of familiarity with one of the three notation programs. (Beginners welcome!) The course is geared towards students who write music, composition majors or non-majors.
