Music Notation 1B for Graduate Students
College of Performing Arts: Mannes
CRN: 11675
Credits: 2
How can I translate my musical ideas into notes and rhythms that performers can understand? Why does presentation matter, anyway? The second half of this yearlong course addresses these central questions by introducing composition students to basic music engraving, notation, and preparation concepts. Students will learn contemporary and historical approaches to notation and apply that knowledge to current engraving technology, including applied methods in three common programs: Dorico, Sibelius, and Finale. Students will also learn to think about printed music in the language of graphic design, with an emphasis on practical knowledge of preparing music for the musicians who will play it. Music Notation 1B will focus on orchestral, vocal, and electroacoustic music, and the coursework will include score study and engraving projects. Completion of Music Notation 1A is a prerequisite for taking this course.
