This Studies in Transgression course examines scholarly works that are an alternative to the mainstream positivistic approaches to social issues in the city. The course will aim at making visible both social inequalities and the social groups affected by them. By focusing the course on transgressions and subcultures in New York City, we employ rigor and sensitivity from an inter-sectional contemporary perspective and focus on those hard-to-reach groups not usually considered in statistical and macro-sociological analysis. The course explores white collar crimes, sexual behavior, toxicomania, con art trickery, and Hip-Hop culture by providing imaginal descriptions and representations in the creation of new knowledge designed to offer the widest facilities for significant conversation. The key questions are how do we study these transgressions? How do we define social norms? What behaviors are considered socially acceptable? More specifically, how do we gain insights into those social worlds from a social, economic, legalistic (law) and public policy point of view.
