Credits: 3

Many social science researchers are motivated by their concerns about social justice. But the “ivory tower” in the US tends to be distanced from everyday politics and political commitments, partly because of a disciplinary ideal of "scientific objectivity." This course will explore how social research (focused on, but not limited to, sociology) can and does contribute to building a more just society. We will engage research and pedagogy that are co-produced with and/or designed for grassroots communities and movements; explore a range of audiences, including policymakers, for research produced in the academy; discuss the role of “public intellectuals” within and outside the US; and consider professional possibilities outside universities for people with social science training.
