Urban Political Ecologies
New School for Social Research: Sociology
CRN: 17931
Credits: 3
This graduate seminar examines cities as ecological formations shaped by infrastructure, capital, governance, and everyday social practice. Drawing from sociology, urban political ecology, environmental humanities, critical geography, and science and technology studies, the course interrogates how ecological relations are organized through systems of circulation, maintenance, extraction, abandonment, and repair. Particular attention is given to the uneven distribution of environmental vulnerability and protection across urban space. The seminar treats the city itself as both method and archive. Students will engage in field-based and experimental forms of research including walking methodologies, sensory ethnography, infrastructural observation, mapping, and environmental documentation. Topics include waste circulation, thermal inequality, rogue ecologies, environmental racism, maintenance labor, atmospheric politics, coastal infrastructures, and the governance of urban nature. Throughout the semester students will develop original research projects grounded in empirical observation and theoretical intervention.
