In this workshop, you'll acquire the research skills needed to advance your future careers, whether the goal is to pursue graduate studies, work in the culture industry, or become a writer, filmmaker, or media producer. You'll learn how to do ethnographic research, carry out successful interviews, engage in participant observations, pursue archival research, and collect, analyze, and interpret quantitative data. Recognizing that emerging AI tools expand our research capacities, you will also learn how to train these tools to work for, not against, you. Since the emphasis in this course is on doing research, assessments will take the form of short research exercises, including a qualitative interview, participant observation, and archival research project. This course will be of specific interest to students who hope to complete a research-based thesis, film, or media project during their time at the college. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing.
