Undergraduate Course
Critical Petrocultures
Fall 2026
Taught By: Heather Davis
Section: A

CRN: 19411

Credits: 4

This course investigates the deep histories behind our current climate emergency, tracing how coal, oil, and gas became embedded in the infrastructure of modern life. The concept of petrocultures describes the ways fossil fuels have shaped not just our economies, but our cultures, politics, and imaginations. How do energy systems structure racial capitalism? Taking a feminist, queer approach, we will read the work of Dominic Boyer, Stephanie LeMenager, E. Cram, Gabrielle Hecht, Amitav Ghosh, Imre Szeman, and Jennifer Wenzel. This course challenges you to think critically about fossil fuels, not as a technical problem with technical solutions, but as a deeply political and cultural force that has remade our world.
