This course is devoted to an in-depth reading of Cedric Robinson’s text Black Marxism which details the values, means, and challenges of the black liberation struggle—the Black Radical Tradition. Our reading of Robinson’s 1983 text will be supplemented by essays from the follow up volume Futures of Black Radicalism (2017), as well as selections from director Steve McQueen’s 2020 film anthology, Small Axe. Drawing these together, students will develop an understanding of the history of the black liberation struggle, the tradition that movements like BLM take up, and its potential futures. [Track C]
