The Digital Doppelgänger

CRN: 16666
Credits: 4
In 2022, the “Digital Doppelgänger” was proposed in a position paper about the way that artificial intelligence will transform the nature of work. This digital double would be able to replicate any number of tasks and behaviors of a human worker, upon which its actions are based, allowing for the replication and replacement of certain types of labor. Tech companies describe this new potential revolution in the labor market as a novel form of “partnership” between human workers and their AI doppelgängers, but it is important to point out that any actions or behaviors learned by this digital double is learned from the living labor of a human agent, whose behaviors are being copied and automated by the digital system. As employee behavior is translated into replicable data points, becoming the raw material for machine learning systems, questions arise about the ownership of a worker's actions and behaviors. This course explores the many ways that our technology duplicates and doubles us. We will explore case studies ranging from work and labor to the growing market in grief technologies; artistic uses of generative AI, to digital zombies that are raised from the remains of our media archives. The primary focus of this seminar will look to the unique conditions of digital media and generative technologies that are used to create these digital doppelgängers, so students should be prepared to read papers from computer science, anthropology, psychology, philosophy, and economics. To best understand these new ideas, we will explore technologies like machine learning, artificial intelligence, and the artificial neural networks that inform these generative media. While this seminar will emphasize phenomena from the digital age, we will also explore important precursors to this idea in myth, literature, and media.
