The many populations that live between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean sea have for decades drawn world-wide attention. This is not by accident; the state of affairs in Israel/Palestine is the result of centuries of global politics. Only through a transnational perspective can historians fully understand the modern history of the region and its people. Considering the often tense and volatile environments in which conversations about contemporary Israel/Palestine take place, while this course will hone in on a multi-vocal, rigorous historical perspective, it will also be conducted in a way that can hold space for the voices in the room to learn from a place of safe curiosity. Expect to encounter new facts and to reconsider old assumptions. Topics include, but are not limited to: the larger contexts of European colonialism, the decline and fall of the Ottoman Empire, the rise of Arab Nationalism, Zionism and antizionism within the Jewish community, Jewish vulnerability within the nation-state system, the international Jewish philanthropic complex, the Cold War and American Hegemony, the Holocaust and Jewish exile from Arab lands, the Nakba, the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, the shifting alliances of the 1970s, the first intifada and the post-colonial model of resistance, Oslo, the second intifada, the settler movement and its impacts on Palestinian lives, the Separation wall, growing Israeli/US institutional ties during the war on terror era, the election of Hamas and blockade of Gaza, the IDF incursions into Gaza before 2023, Israeli-Arabs and Israeli civil society, and the events of the last year.
