Listening and Questioning: Audio Narratives
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Journalism + Design
CRN: 17522
Credits: 4
In this listening workshop and speaker series, students open their ears to a wide range of compelling audio from across the audio industry. Each week, we'll listen to work and, whenever possible, discuss it with the creator. Guest speakers include audio professionals as well as multi-disciplinary storytellers whose careers represent many paths of journalism and beyond. Students lead the class discussion with ample time to learn from guest speakers about careers while looking critically at the questions of power inherent in making audio journalism. Together, the class explores new and old audio, questions the techniques and ethics behind audio journalism, and dreams up new ways of listening and creating. Students track their listening with journals, be responsible for leading discussions and submit and present a final zine project at the end of the semester. This course satisfies the Form Elective requirement for the Journalism + Design major.
