Global Journalism
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Journalism + Design
CRN: 14760
Credits: 4
In this intensive seminar, students range across more than a century of international reporting to learn the history of foreign correspondence and its present state amid the decline of legacy media and an ever more decentralized information environment. Communications are more open than ever before, yet global journalists face many familiar challenges: censorship, war, natural disaster, disease, and famine, as well as new forms of surveillance. Meanwhile, social media has become both an essential source of information and an unreliable one. Readings and viewings by Shireen Abu Akleh, Katherine Boo, Marie Colvin, Gloria Emerson, Farnaz Fassihi, Martha Gellhorn, Seymour Hersh, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Mathew Heineman, Azmat Khan, Elena Kostuchenko, Jean H. Lee, Antony Loyd, Hisham Matar, Charles Onyango-Obbo, Maria Ressa, Joseph Roth, Mark Twain, Ley Uwera, Gary Younge, and Jianying Zha, plus foreign correspondents, podcasters, and filmmakers to visit — remotely and in-person, as schedules permit. Emphasis is on close readings, rigorous debate, and weekly reaction pieces in varying formats, including text, visual, and audio. This course satisfies the Liberal Arts Elective requirement for the Journalism + Design major.
