CRN: 14761

Credits: 4

This course introduces students to visual storytelling techniques to report on local food systems and establishments, an increasingly popular genre in the past decade. Bon Appetit, Serious Eats, and Whetstone all make videos about food, restaurants and general-interest news organizations have robust food video teams. Students pitch, storyboard, research, pre-interview, film, and execute basic editing techniques. While practicing these video reporting and production fundamentals, students also watch and analyze viral videos and popular YouTube series to see what makes them successful. The semester culminates in a final story about food. Students should have access to a smartphone, laptop, desktop, or tablet for shooting and editing. This course satisfies the Form Elective requirement for the Journalism + Design major.
