Sports are about far more than wins and losses: Athletes and their storylines influence everything from celebrity culture to social justice movements, and conversations about sports can also be conversations about urban development, working conditions, race, gender, nationalism, drug use, gambling, mental health, and so on. In this course, students will learn to go beyond the X’s and O’s to cover sports in a novel, engaging way. We’ll examine stories in various media to understand what makes for effective coverage and put those observations into practice. This counts toward the general elective for the Journalism + Design major.
