Open Source Reporting
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Journalism + Design
CRN: 19687
Credits: 4
This hands-on course explores the cutting-edge field of open-source investigative (OSINT) journalism, a set of techniques used to report on everything from trafficking in baby tigers to the poisoning of the late Russian opposition leader Aleksei Navalny and the war in Iran. Students will level up their digital skills: sourcing and verifying information from the internet, including photos, videos, ship- and flight-tracking data, and radio communications. Through assignments and in-class exercises, students will build practical skills like geolocation, metadata analysis, and advanced internet searching, and use them to report their own original stories.
