Collective Storytelling
Spring 2024
Taught By: Che Broadnax
Section: A

CRN: 14770

Credits: 4

In this course, students will collaborate in groups to collect personal accounts about a recent event in New York City, then craft a narrative about, and in dialogue with, the stories they collected. This storytelling approach diverges from how Big Journalism covers major events such as the COVID-19 pandemic or climate-change disasters like hurricanes in Puerto Rico and wildfires on Maui. Personal stories of families, neighborhoods, local organizations, people of color and Indigenous groups may become details in a mainstream narrative, but major outlets tend to focus on how such events affect corporations, government, and wealthy or prominent individuals. The story development process will be much like how an independent documentary team collectively discovers their narrative, but final projects may take any form appropriate to the target audience and goals identified collectively by each group. While making something they can point to and be like, “Yo, we did this!” students will gain practice in creating a supportive, collaborative environment and healthy ways of resolving conflict in groups.
