Art & Journalism
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Journalism + Design
CRN: 15648
Credits: 4
In this course, students will examine the complex relationship between art and journalism, learn to think critically and creatively about the marriage of reporting with form, and attempt to define the terms "fact" and "truth." In addition to close readings of fiction, nonfiction and theoretical texts, we shall study the work of creatives such as comedians, filmmakers, data journalists, and visual artists. A number of artists and journalists will visit our class to discuss their philosophies and processes. Students will enrich their understanding of stylistic and ethical issues by pursuing a reporting project in a format of their choice, ranging from poetry to animation to audio to sculpture to zine. This project may be considered a jumping-off point for students' Capstone projects in later semesters.
