Journalism can be a difficult industry to break into. Internship and job applications require a professional portfolio—but what goes in that if you haven’t had an internship or a job? In this course, students will gain skills and resources to navigate this process: create a professional portfolio site to showcase their best work, develop polished resumes and compelling cover letters, and map out the path to landing internships, freelance assignments, or their first job. Through hands-on workshops, peer feedback, and conversations with industry professionals, students will learn to think about what kind of career they want and work backward to develop a concrete plan to get there. By the end of the course, students will have a strategy for their journalism career and the confidence to take the first steps to get there.
