Digital tools allow anyone to find new ways of meeting the information needs of communities united by geography, identity, and common interests. Entrepreneurial journalists have found ways to get paid using these tools. Paid subscribers support newsletters about everything from progressive politics to perfume; podcasters and TikTokers seek crowdfunding; newsrooms with nonprofit status focus on single issues such as gun violence, big tech, and higher education. Once upon a time, journalists at newspapers or magazines could enjoy predictable careers with middle-class lifestyles. But today, journalists have joined the entreprecariat, and seasoned journalists as well as aspiring professionals have to think like an entrepreneur, even when they have a full-time job. In this course, students will learn about different ways that people approach their lives as working journalists. Then they will prototype a journalistic product of their own devising using a design process and lean startup principles. Along the way, they will explore a wide array of examples of 21st-century journalism: global and local; mass and niche; one-person shops and massive corporations; venture funded, nonprofit, and collectively owned; successes and failures; inspiring models and cautionary tales. This course satisfies the Form Elective requirement for the Journalism + Design major.
