This course–reserved for New School Free Press editors–will cover the art of managing a team in a newsroom context. The Free Press is the New School's student-run newspaper, covering the campus community and catering to the interests of New School students. In this course, student editors will learn how to develop clear goals for their section; develop clear roles to accomplish those goals; recruit and hire for those roles; and lead, train, and support that team. We will learn how to design workflows that are based on systems thinking, and talk with professional newsroom leaders to further inform our decision making. By the end of the course, students will have a greater understanding of how to lead and support a team of journalists who want to serve their community. You must have instructor permission to enroll in this course.
