What Is Fantasy?
Spring 2025
Taught By: Emma Lieber
Section: A

CRN: 15591

Credits: 4

This class will be on works of literature (by writers such as Borges, Kafka, Gogol, Bulgakov, Coleridge, Sophocles, Murakami, Machado, Woolf, and others), critical theory (literary and anthropological theory--Levi-Strauss, Todorov--as well as the psychoanalytic theories of Freud and Lacan), and film, all of which will explore different theories of dreams and fantasy. We will ask such questions as: what is the role of fantasy in subjective life? In what way does unconscious fantasy structure personality, and what does this have to do with both day- and night-dreaming? What is the relationship between fantasy and literature or art more broadly, and how can we interpret the presence of fantastical elements in literary narrative? What is the relationship between fantasy and myth, both in literary history and in psychic structuring?

This course meets the introductory course requirement for Literary Studies majors and is intended for beginner Literary Studies students.
