Known for her modernist masterworks To The Lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Woolf was also an essayist who wrote about literature, from Shakespeare to the contemporary London Scene, and political essays such as the celebrated “A Room of One’s Own” about women and writing and an examination of war in “Three Guineas.” She also wrote a novel with a cross-dressing history-surfing protagonist and a biography of a dog. In addition, she was a memoirist, a lifelong diarist, a remarkable letter writer, and, along with her husband and sister, founder of a small press, which published T.S. Eliot, E.M. Forster, Katherine Mansfield, and Vita Sackville-West, as well as the first English translations of Freud. We will read across all her works, and we will also look at responses to her, both in her times and now We will consider her in the context of modernism, her intensely active Bloomsbury group, WWI and WWII, and London (which she loved), and make connections to such contemporary fields as gender and colonial/postcolonialism studies.
