Scary Movie Adaptations: Cinematic and Textual Narratives

In this class, we will watch horror films and read the novels or stories on which they are based. We will consider the differences between cinematic and textual narratives and focus on the techniques employed in both forms to achieve emotional impact and thematic resonance. Possible films & their adaptations that will be studied: Angela Carter’s “Company of Wolves” adapted by Neil Jordan, Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, Thomas Harris’s Silence of the Lambs adapted by Jonathan Demme, Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. This list, however, is provisional & likely to change.
