Lang at Roulette
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 15984
Credits: 4
This course explores the past and present of experimental music, dance, and intermedia through a partnership with the performing arts venue Roulette, founded over 40 years ago in a TriBeCa loft and now located in downtown Brooklyn. Roulette’s Associate Artistic Director Matt Mehlan will introduce students to a vibrant community of adventurous artists and new creative work through performances at Roulette and site visits to other venues and studios in the city. Students should be available to attend 4 evening events outside of class time. This course also enables students to gain first-hand insights into the creative, technical, and administrative aspects of working and performing at an established non-profit arts center. Research projects and critical discussions of readings by Gabrielle Detterer, Jace Clayton, David Byrne, and Derek Bailey, and other writers will allow students to contextualize the work of select artists, experimental music cultures, and the role of arts institutions and artist-run spaces in New York from recent decades to the present.
