Music Zines
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 19515
Credits: 4
Since the rock and punk fanzines of the late 1960s and 70s right up to the present, independently published zines have been both documenting and shaping music scenes, fan networks, and subcultures. This course approaches zines on music in three interrelated ways. First, by critically reading and interpreting zines themselves. Guided by the these primary sources as well as contextualizing texts and audio(-visual) materials, the course explores histories of (post-)punk, hardcore, metal, indie rock, hip-hop, and riot grrrl; DIY publishing and distribution networks; and varied related topics that are frequented in music zines, including fashion, dance, (extreme) sports, (music) technology, comics, and political activism. Second, by surveying the ways zines have been archived. We will investigate analog and digital preservation methods, grassroots and academic archives, and debates surrounding copyright and open access. Third, through making a zine. This effort—involving a combination of writing, copyediting, photography, collage, and layout design—will be ongoing throughout the semester, with the eventual distribution-ready product serving as the final project for the class. Additional coursework includes in-class writing assignments and short presentations plus asynchronous discussion board posts.
